Statement of Purpose
I developed interest in the field of analytics in the final year of my under-graduation. I did some courses in the domain of data analytics and visualization, wherein I was fascinated to know that meaningful data can be represented pictorially and better results can be obtained . Also the fact that, using large amount of data we could obtain meaningful information which will help in improving the performance of the organization.
I had taken subjects in my undergraduate studies which were related to computer science domain like fundamentals of programming which gave me an in depth insight into the programming concepts. Also my final semester project had concepts of computer engineering and programming techniques which was done with combination of embedded systems. This involved building a rotatory mechanism where objects of different shapes and sizes were placed and used image processing algorithm to segregate the different objects into their respective shape and size. All these factors will surely help me because I have the required skill-set and knowledge for pursuing my master’s program in data analytics engineering. Since I have the practical experience of handling dataset, I will be able to understand the theoretical concept as well as the project which would be done at the end of the course.
One of the inspiration was the movie “money ball” . This movie revolves around the game of baseball. The main character which attracted me was the statistician in this movie. He works in a baseball club, helping in setting up the team with the minimum budget possible. He employs a unique statistical analysis in order to choose players for the team he is working for. In this process he is able to choose undervalued players. In this way, he is able to use the resources of his team more effectively. He is able to choose the best possible player for the fair valuable cost which will help his baseball company in the long run. The fact that use of numbers effectively can have such large scale impact on an entire game is fascinating. Also the fact that data can be used effectively in any field to derive meaningful information and can improve the company’s profitability. So when data is generated and different analytic tools are applied we will be able understand the functions of the data analytics concepts. By analyzing the information we can understand any flaws in the working of the company and rectify them.
I have worked as a associate Hadoop consultant on a data science project which involved analyzing huge amount of unstructured data. The Master’s program at George Mason University is structured in a unique format which has courses in a combination of fundamental courses and advance level courses. I have understood the fundamental concepts in my first semester. Later I will do an advance level course in my next semester which will enhance and improve my skills. I will be able to interact with a lot of like minded people at mason, especially my classmates in the same course because for every course there will be students from different background. Each person will have their own unique set of knowledge base and experience. I will be studying under the guidance of highly experienced faculty who have expertise in their respective field of study. I will also be able to seek guidance from highly accomplished professors for the research projects wherein I can also work on some real time project and apply big data techniques to them. This will prepare me for a highly competitive career in the future. I will also be able to attend the various data science conferences organized by the campus which will help me in networking with people from different background with interest in data science topics.
After gaining an in-depth knowledge in the field of data science I wish to work as a data scientist, wherein I will be able to analyze the various types of data-sets generated in different fields. Analytics domain is an integral part of the every nation and needs to be sustained and improved periodically. Application of analytics will help the companies immensely as they will be able to rectify errors in their business model and develop new strategies for the future.
